    What will they be??

One of my favorite girls "Gecko" started laying today. She's an olive wildtype, but has red gills. She's bred with my white leucistic "Whitey", who also fathered my other babies. Interestingly, the eggs are half white/half black. I thought wildtypes laid black eggs that turned white as they...

    Budget 4 Tank Rack

With my 300 babies getting bigger, I've needed more tank space and have been looking out on ebay etc for a deal. With the minister for finance (and war) getting a bit concerned about my spending and the fact that the garage is turning into an aquatic center, it had to be a GOOD deal. I turned...

    My babies at 10 days

I've been nursing these guys for the last 10 days, and haven't got around to taking any pics. The parents were both white leucistics, unrelated. I'm guessing I've got about 300 in total in 3 different flavors, approximately 100 of each. 1. White Leucistics. 2. Wildtypes or darker...

    Stimulating appetite in fry

This is my first batch (300) of fry so I don't claim to be an expert, but I may have stumbled onto something by chance. They're 3-4 days old now, and I was ready with both BBS and microworms. I'd read that the BBS was the best for them, so I've only fed that to them, but have found that they...

    Australian Daphnia

Today my sons and I rode quad bikes to a reasonably remote little waterhole on our farm to try and harvest daphnia. This waterhole is fed from a rainforest mountain and never runs dry. It has duckweed and another weird surface plant I've never seen before, and if you don't disturb the muddy...

    The Elusive Copper Axolotl

Hi All, This topic comes up from time to time, but it's fun and it's been a while. Who out there in Australia (and elsewhere) has a real copper axolotl? They are a fantastic color, and for some reason mostly in Australia and Germany?? The closest I've got is an olive spotted female with red...

    Different way to hatch eggs

With all the eggs I have at the moment, I'm getting ready to move them. I have a couple of those "fry cages", the small rectangular frames with mesh net around them and suction cups to stick them to the sides of the aquarium. Would there be a problem with putting all my eggs into one of them...

    Game on??

Did a major tank clean and redecorate yesterday, along with an approximate 40% water change. Added some extra hides and plastic plants as well. Very next morning I came out to find these spotted around the tank: They look like spermaphores to me, but have unfortunately been laid and...

    Age limit before breeding.

I'm aware of the recommended 18 months minimum age before breeding, but is it a recommendation or a hard and fast rule? The reason I ask is that I suspect I have two 10-12 month old females who are full of eggs. With a recent cold snap that has seen my tank temps fall from 18 deg (with chiller...

De Lousing Wild Caught Live Food

Is there a basic generic chemical that wild caught feeder fish could be treated with during their quarantine? I've had to set up an automatic pellet feeder while I was out of town, but what I would have like to have done is had a scoop full of the Gambusia that are absolutely infesting the...

    Using Bunnings Sand in Australia

I was hoping a fellow Aussie will help me here. I'm looking at using sand in my 2 large tanks, I'm well aware not to use gravel (despite what the LFS told me today). In my four footer I have used well rinsed beach sand which has been really good, but I don't want to cart the kinds of amounts...

    Scored!

While it's not set in stone yet, I may have secured a large part of a fish breeders room at a nice price. I'll know for sure tomorrow, and then delivery would be Monday. It's four 6x2x2 tanks in two double tiered racks, that will fit perfectly down one wall of my garage/storeroom. They are...

    Badly bitten leg

Sadly one of my smaller lotls has had its leg badly bitten. He's smaller than the rest and it was possibly bad judgment to put him in there, but the tank's pretty big and all has gone well till today. The leg is still attached but looks to be wrecked and just hanging behind him. He's actually...

    Optimum TDS?

I've done some searching but can't find a solid answer for this question... Does anyone know the sweet spot TDS (total dissolved solids) reading in PPM (parts per million) for axolotls? I've used these meters extensively through work, and would like to get one to check my tank, as my API...

    Setting up my new tank.

Hi All, I'm in the act of setting up a new tank for my son, so he can have some axolotls. Before I found this forum I had already filled the bottom of the tank with rocks and gravel. I want to have plants, so I've gone through picking all the smaller rocks out by hand and left only stuff...

    Hi All

Hi, I'm in the mid north coast of NSW, Australia. When I was a little kid I had an Axolotl that lived about 7 years and grew into the biggest one I have ever seen even to this day, about 30-35cms long. I unwittingly broke all the rules, had him on gravel, feed him all sorts of critters...

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
